Our approach

Mycelium-Based Search. Building leadership from the ground up.

A regenerative, systems-led methodology for senior appointments, built for roles where leadership shapes growth, brand and investor confidence.

The principle

Leadership, designed the way nature builds resilience

In nature, mycelium is the network beneath the forest floor. It redistributes nutrients, reconnects roots and regenerates entire ecosystems. It is how a forest stays resilient through change.

Mycelium-Based Search applies the same principle to leadership hiring. Rather than starting from an inherited job description, we start from a clean slate, mapping the full system a leader must succeed within, then designing the role from the ground up.

It borrows from zero-based thinking: nothing is assumed, and every requirement is examined and justified against where the business is heading. The result is a comprehensive, realistic definition of the role that guides every stage of the search, and leadership that genuinely takes root.

"The desired outcome is not simply to fill a vacancy. It is to create the conditions for the organisation to thrive."

In short

Traditional search asks who can fill the role. Mycelium-Based Search first asks what the role must truly become, then finds the leader designed to deliver it.

The problem

Most leadership search answers the wrong brief

Leadership vacancies are a rare chance to rethink what a business truly needs. Yet hiring criteria are too often drawn from three flawed sources, and speed is prioritised over depth.

01

The outdated job description

Roles are filled against a written brief that frequently describes the last era of the business, not the one the leader must build next.

02

The shadow of the last incumbent

Criteria are shaped by the perceived gaps of the person leaving, anchoring the search to the past rather than the future.

03

Unexamined assumption and bias

Decisions lean on the preferences of those in the room. Reactive hiring replaces a leader; it rarely regenerates the role.

The stakes

The cost of getting it wrong dwarfs the cost of getting it right

A failed senior appointment carries cost far beyond the CEO seat. The matrix below sets out the real impact across two leadership tiers.

Impact area Cost of a misaligned hire Cost of a considered delay
